Netherlands-South African Society (NZAV)

The NZAV is the oldest institution who concentrates its efforts on South Africa in the Netherlands, and was founded in 1881. For more than a century the intent has been to promote cultural contact between the two countries. The institution busies itself with the worlds of research, humanities and literature. The NZAV has a unique archival collection, which is used by researchers from the Netherlands and other countries.

Information enquiry

The NZAV members have entry to many aspects of the South African society, by way of an enormous information and knowledge network. Organisations and associations frequently ask the NZAV to help them with organizing meetings and readings, but also for programs on radio and tv. Besides this, the NZAV itself is also an organizer of readings and symposia, for which they regularly invite speakers from South Africa.

Travelling

The commission Exchangeprojects organizes excursions with a special theme, from and to South Africa. The previous years there were group travels, with lawyers and historians. A part of the program is the Youth Journey. On reguest the NZAV could help with the organization of travel programs for commercial touroperators.

Departments and regional representation

The Dutch South African Society (NZAV) have some departments in the country which organise activities for members in the respective regions. There are departments in the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht, as well as in the north. The department in the north has its own internet site on which the activities in that region (Groningen, Friesland, Noord-Overijssel, Flevoland and Drente) are also being announced. Departments have been set up in 2006 also in the east, south and south-west of the country. By means of a number of activities during 2007, they try to determine whether there is a need for representation in these regions.
