Film: African Jim (aka Jim comes to Jo'Burg) in the Maand van de Geschiedenis - October 24th

Maand van de Geschiedenis: Geluk (Happiness)
Tuesday, October 24, 2017, 19.30, Movie: African Jim (aka Jim comes to Jo'Burg)
(South Africa, 1949, 52 min, English spoken)
With: Daniel Adnewmah, Dolly Rathebe, The African Inkspots

A simple story of a rural boy coming to the city to seek his happiness. He has trouble adapting to the busy city life, but finally finds his niche when his vocal talent is discovered. With the help of musicians from the townships (including one of South Africa's best-known singers in the 1950s, Dolly Rathebe), the film was a sensation for the black audience who had never before seen their own heroes on screen. But the film also has a great historical value; these images of the past reflect a vibrant township culture, which would disappear a few years later, due to apartheid.
