Chatsworth. by Pravasan Pillay. Bromhof, South Africa: Dye Hard Press, 2018, ISBN 9780986998256

Chatsworth is Pravasan Pillay’s debut short fiction collection and consists of eleven stories set in the sprawling township of Chatsworth, Durban. The stories are populated mostly by working-class characters who all, in one way or the other, find themselves on the margins of their community.

There is an elderly mother and her dependent obese daughter who must fend for themselves; an angst-filled twelve-year-old girl who secretly chain smokes late at night; a tearful man who is incapable of passing his driving test; an albino girl who attains a fragile popularity in high school; a young woman who – against her father’s wishes – falls in love with an immigrant; a seemingly placid pensioner who hides a shockingly violent side; and a pair of girls who bond over a love letter and hair bleach, among others.

The stories present sensitive yet unsentimental portraits of these characters, in prose that is spare and unadorned. Pillay additionally displays a remarkable ear for dialogue, and faithfully captures much of the nuance of Durban-Indian English.

Chatsworth is a gentle and moving book about growing up, being different, but also about failing at adulthood.

Die Troebadoer. ’n Vertelling, deur Marié Heese. Eerste uitgawe, Pretoria: Protea Boekhuis, 2021, ISBN 9781485313519, R295,-

– Deborah Steinmair

Mag Die Diep Slaap Jou Dan, deur Hilda Smits, Eerste uitgawe. Pretoria: Protea Boekhuis, 2021, ISBN 9781485312949, R220,-

Dié bundel is deur beoordelaars beskryf as “‘n boeiende debuut”.

Goed, Beter, Betsie, deur Elizabeth Catharina Labuschagne.  Eerste uitgawe, Pretoria: Protea Boekhuis, 2021, ISBN 9781485312642, R295,-

Sy sou gaan leer, buig of bars.

Chris Hani, by Hugh Macmillan,  Third impression. Jacana Pocket Series. Auckland Park, South Africa: Jacana, 2014. ISBN 9781431408917, R175,-

Chris Hani is one of the most iconic black leaders in South Africa’s recent history. His assassination in 1993 by far-right wingers threatened to upset the negotiations process and required Mandela’s televised address to the nation to calm tempers. This short biography brings out his role in MK and in the politics of the early 1990s, and is written by a distinguished historian who met Hani in exile in Lusaka.

Film van de maand
Moffie. regie Oliver Hermanus. Acteurs onder anderen: Kai Luke Brummer, Barbara-Marié Immelman, Michael Kirch. – Afrikaans en Engels gesproken, Nederlands ondertiteld. Cinemien, 2021.

To be a moffie is to be weak, effeminate, illegal. The year is 1981 and South Africa’s white minority government is embroiled in a conflict on the southern Angolan border. Like all white boys over the age of 16, Nicholas Van der Swart must complete two years of compulsory military service to defend the apartheid regime.

The threat of communism and “die swart gevaar” (the so-called black danger) is at an all-time high. But that’s not the only danger Nicholas faces. He must survive the brutality of the army – something that becomes even more difficult when a connection is sparked between him and a fellow recruit.

Jeugdboek van de maand
Shorty & Billy Boy : A Tale of Two Naughty Dogs, by Gerard Sekoto, Reprinted. Auckland Park, South Africa: Jacana Media, 2018, ISBN 9781431406067, R140,-

Written and illustrated in 1973 by one of South Africa’s most famous artists, Gerard Sekoto, Shorty and Billy Boy is a book for children as well as art lovers and collectors.

The manuscript formed part of a private collection of Sekoto’s sketches, artworks, letters and memoirs repatriated to South Africa from France. The story was clearly written and illustrated as a personal exercise and possibly a sentimental souvenir of his own childhood memories, but has not been published until now. Sekoto may well have composed it as a gift for children of friends, as he was often engaged in making greeting cards with accompanying illustrations. There are other unfinished stories and musical compositions in the estate collection, but Shorty and Billy Boy is the most complete.

Shorty and Billy Boy tells the tale of two troublesome dogs whose thieving ways take them to the far-away town of Porcupine Hills. Here they meet all sorts of interesting characters, but continue their mischief until Billy Boy is caught red-handed and sent to jail. Here he dreams about the kindness of others, and comes to realise that good deeds are the true measure of freedom.

The Gerard Sekoto Foundation has approved a number of editorial changes made to Sekoto’s original text, where the aim has been to preserve the integrity and flavour of the unpublished story, while making it more accessible to present-day readers. The South African context of the tale has been accentuated, and obsolete language and minor inconsistencies have been removed. The result is a timeless and engaging story that retains Sekoto’s unique spirit and imagination.

Includes a biography of the author.
