Zanele Muholi, Somnyama Ngonyama = Hail the Dark Lioness. Mussai Renée, and Unoma Nguemo Azuah. Firsted. New York, NY: Aperture, 2018, ISBN 9781597114240

A powerfully arresting collection of work, Muholi’s radical statements of identity, race, and resistance are a direct response to contemporary and historical racisms. As Muholi states, ‘I am producing this photographic document to encourage individuals in my community to be brave enough to occupy spaces – brave enough to create without fear of being vilified… to teach people about our history, to rethink what history is all about, to reclaim it for ourselves – to encourage people to use artistic tools such as cameras as weapons to fight back.’

Zanele Muholi, Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness is the long-awaited monograph from one of the most powerful visual activists of our time. The book features over ninety of Muholi’s evocative self-portraits, each image drafted from material props in Muholi’s immediate environment. These portraits reflect the journey, self-image, and possibilities of a black woman in today’s global society.

Accompanying essays and poetry:

The Lion, the Dung Beetle and the Veld Tool Box. 20 Bush Tales from Southern Africa. Stories from the Veld, by David Bristow, Auckland Park, South Africa: Jacana Media, 2021. ISBN 9781431431908, R.250.00

In The Lion, the Dung Beetle and the Veld Tool Box, natural history and travel writer David Bristow delivers the fourth in his ‘Stories from the Veld’ series of non-fiction narratives.

You could say this book has a bit of everything: scientific descriptions of animals alongside philosophical discourses on the nature of wilderness, high drama in the jaws of death, and tragedy played out as farce when things go unexpectedly wrong on safari.

You’ll also find out why lions can roar so loudly, why giraffes can barely whisper, why the elephant’s trunk is one of nature’s wonders and why dung beetles study astronomy. The author examines questions featuring little-known information about nature and some of its creatures.

Then there is the quirkier stuff, like men who think they are lions, a woman who watches wolves (otherwise known as brown hyenas), and an explorer who invented his own species. And if that was not enough, there’s the man who fought off hippos and crocodiles only to be rescued by a buffalo, and a woman who lived in a tree.

Written in the same engaging style as his previous three books in the Stories from the Veld series (The Game Ranger, the Knife, the Lion and the Sheep; Of Hominins, Hunter Gatherers and Heroes; and Big Pharma, Dirty Lies, Busy Bees and Eco Activists), these bush tales are written in his usual highly entertaining style, yet are intricately woven through with scholarly insights into his subjects.

Poetic Bodies and Corpses of War. South African Great War Poetry. By Gerhard Genis. Pretoria: Unisa Press, 2018, ISBN 9781868888504

South African poetry of the Great War reveals not only the types of poetry that were written during the war, but also the historical spirit of the times. It mirrors the ways in which manliness, whiteness, blackness, colonialism and empire were viewed during the early 20th-century South Africa. The poems also go to the heart of the spiritualism of the era and thematically explore the nature of death, dying, suffering and sacrifice. The post-war poetry that looks back on this conflict is also discussed. The poetry written by blacks resonates with the themes of black self-affirmation and it exhibits early signs of black nationalism. What all the poetry has in common is the major theme of coming to terms with loss. It speaks of a collective South African consciousness that resides deep within the wounds of conflict.

Deborah Poynton. Beyond Belief. Deborah Poynton, Mads Damsbo, Karlijn de Jong, and Provinciaal Museum van Drenthe. Translated by Paul Hulsman and Jane Rowley. Hedendaagse Kunstenaars in Het Drents Museum, Deel 6. Zwolle: WBOOKS, 2021, ISBN 9789462583962

Deborah Poynton’s monumental paintings are painted with great attention to the smallest detail. With a few fixed models, nature and everyday objects, Poynton composes a non-existent reality. The beauty of the paintings attracts the viewer and gives him the feeling that he can enter a new world. Although Poynton does not put any message in her paintings, it still seems to the viewer as if she wants to tell a story. Poynton emphasizes that every spectator has his own perception. With her paintings she hopes to make the viewer really look again. In a world that is full of images, this has become more difficult, according to Poynton. The large format of the paintings promotes instinctive viewing, without the use of reason, because the viewer gets the feeling that he can step into the painting. Poynton’s exceptional realism brings her painted world closer. However, because she leaves parts of her paintings unfinished, she also shows what a painting actually is: a complete illusion.

Travels with My Father. An Autobiographical Novel. Karen Jennings, Karen, London: Holland Park Press, 2016, ISBN 9781907320699

Travels with My Father is a beautifully written autobiographical novel. Written from the point of view of a young woman, daughter and writer, it is a frank, yet delicate and moving, account of her relationship with her father and his influence on her own life. In the footsteps of her father, the author travels the world. Yet, key scenes are set in Plumstead, a suburb of Cape Town, where her father lived most of his life. The relationships and divisions between members of a family that does not wear its heart on its sleeve, and some of whom are real eccentrics, are sensitively recorded. It all adds to an intricate picture of a changing South African society.

Holloway, Tienie, Wendy Maartens, and Alida Bothma. Die Beste Kinderverse Van Tienie Holloway. Eerste uitgawe ed. Hatfield, Pretoria: Protea Boekhuis, 2021, ISBN 781485310068, R.250.00
