On 15 May 2025 we will host our first movie day at Het Zuid-Afrikahuis.

The theme of the movie day will be centred around Resistance, Perseverance, and Power in times of Helplessness and Struggle. For this reason, we will be screening Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom with Idris Elba and Naomie Harris playing the roles of Nelson and Winnie Mandela.

This film is an adapted version of Mandela’s autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, which was first published in 1994. The film depicts Mandela’s early life, coming of age, education, and the 27 years he spent in prison before he became South Africa’s first democratically elected Black president. Through this biographical film we see Mandela become an anti-apartheid activist and develop his passion and goal to improve South Africa after the end of apartheid.

The evening will commence with an opening speech by Meghan Rider, a South African volunteer. Following this the first half of the film will be played and before the second half is screened there will be a short break. At the end there will be the opportunity to discuss key parts of the film and to draw connections between what we see happening then, as well as what we see happening in today’s world. Snacks and drinks will be provided for the film.

The opening speech and film will be in English and there will be Dutch subtitles.
