Would you like to contribute to the development of a new generation of South African researchers and students? The Study Fund for South African Students (SSF) supports talented Master’s and PhD students from South Africa who wish to undertake part of their studies in the Netherlands. Students from all South African universities and academic disciplines are eligible to apply.

Since 1888, the SSF has been committed to supporting academic talent from South Africa. The Fund is financed through its own endowment, legacies, and a contribution from Stichting Zuid-Afrikahuis Nederland (the South Africa House Netherlands Foundation), to which the SSF is statutorily linked.

What are we looking for?

The SSF Board aims to further strengthen the Fund’s visibility in South Africa, increase the diversity of its scholarship recipients, and enhance its long-term financial sustainability. Important steps have been taken in recent years, and the Board seeks to accelerate this development in the years ahead.

To help shape this next phase, we are looking for board members who can think strategically, are willing to take governance responsibilities, and are committed to fostering international academic exchange between South Africa and the Netherlands.

The role involves two board meetings per year, together with a few hours of preparation and occasional consultations throughout the year. The time commitment is therefore limited, but your engagement and contribution will be highly valued.

We are seeking board members who:

  • have experience in, or a strong connection to, South African and Dutch higher education and preferably an active network in both countries
  • have experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas: student mobility, scholarships, alumni relations, international cooperation, finance and investment management, or fundraising;
  • are committed to supporting the continued development and sustainable future of the Fund.

Diversity

We strive for a Board that reflects a diversity of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. Women and candidates with a South African, African, or bicultural background are therefore especially encouraged to apply. Where candidates are equally qualified, preference will be given to those who contribute to the diversity of the Board.

What do we offer

This is a meaningful governance role within a committed and knowledgeable Board. You will have the opportunity to contribute to talent development, maintain a valuable international network, and help shape the future of a fund with a rich history. The position is unpaid; however, reasonable expenses may be reimbursed by mutual agreement.

How to Apply

Please send your motivation letter and CV by 31 October 2026 to studiefonds@zuidafrikahuis.nl.

Form more information, please contact Wessel van Arnhem, Secretary of the Board, at +31 (0)206249318.
