Decolonizing Our Views of the Zuid-Afrikahuis and its Collections

Diversiteit en inclusie zijn begrippen die sinds enkele jaren het beleid van culturele instanties in Nederland vorm moeten geven. Maar hoe voorkom je dat dergelijke begrippen buzz-words worden om het beleid op te poetsen en een graantje mee te pikken, zonder dat het ingrijpende consequenties heeft voor de praktijk?

Dat geldt uiteraard ook voor het Zuid-Afrikahuis (ZAH) dat vorig jaar 100 jaar was gevestigd in het pand aan de Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. Dit eeuwfeest was een mooi moment om de archieven, de (ordening van de) bibliotheek, de objecten, de inrichting van het ZAH en zijn activiteiten kritisch onder de loep te nemen, voortbouwend op een eerder door het ZAH ingezette koers van dekolonisatie.  Wat laten zij in eerste instantie zien — en vooral wat wordt zichtbaar zodra we onze lens scherper stellen — over de Nederlandse koloniale geschiedenis, en over de rol van het ZAH in de relatie tussen Zuid-Afrika en Nederland?

De organisaties die het ZAH voorgingen, waren vanaf het eind van de negentiende eeuw primair gericht op hun vermeende witte ‘neven’ in Zuid-Afrika. De identificatie met de witte nationalistische Afrikaners werkte — ook ten tijde van apartheid — door in de collectie, publicaties en activiteiten van het Huis. Juist die stellingname maakt het noodzakelijk om deze erfenis van een koloniaal en settler-tijdperk in het ZAH te benaderen vanuit een kritische, dekoloniserende invalshoek.

Daartoe vroegen wij een elftal auteurs, die ieder een object — zoals een tekst, foto, schilderij, of een ander artefact — van de collectie van het ZAH als uitgangspunt namen. De bundel is het resultaat van hun onderzoek naar wat nog niet kenbaar was in de alledaagse praktijk en de geschiedenis van het Huis. In korte essays tonen zij welke absent presences zichtbaar worden, die tot nu toe buiten ons zicht bleven.

Na een introductie door Margriet van der Waal zullen de eerste twee exemplaren van de deze bundel worden uitgereikt aan Jan Schinkelshoek, voorzitter van het bestuur van de huidige Stichting Zuid-Afrikahuis Nederland, en Jennifer Tosch, Nederlands-Amerikaans cultureel-erfgoedhistoricus en ondernemer. Decolonising Our Views of the Zuid-Afrikahuis and its Collections

Diversity and inclusion are concepts that have been shaping the policies of cultural institutions in the Netherlands for some years now. But how do you prevent such concepts from becoming buzz-words to polish the policy and grab a piece of the pie without having significant consequences on everyday practices?

This certainly applies to the South Africa House (ZAH), which celebrated its 100^th anniversary at its location on Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. This centenary offered a good opportunity to critically examine the archives, the (arrangement of the) library, the objects, the setup of the ZAH, and its activities, building on a previous course of  decolonisation initiated by the ZAH.  What do they initially reveal — and more importantly, what becomes visible when we fine-tune the focus of our critical lens  — about Dutch colonial history, and about the role of the ZAH in the relationship between South Africa and the Netherlands?

Since the late nineteenth century, the precursor organisations of the ZAH were primarily focused on their perceived white ‘cousins’ in South Africa. The identification with white nationalist Afrikaners persisted — even during apartheid — in the collection, publications and activities of these organizations. It is precisely this stance that makes it necessary to approach this legacy of a colonial and settler era in the ZAH from a critical, decolonizing perspective.

To this end, we approached eleven authors, each of whom took an object — such as a text, photograph, painting, or other artefact —from the collection of the ZAH as a starting point. This volume is the result of their research into what was not yet evident in everyday practice and in the history of the Huis. In short essays, they show which absent presences become visible, ones that have so far remained outside our view.

After an introduction by Margriet van der Waal, the first two copies of this volume will be presented to Jan Schinkelshoek, chairman of the board of the current Stichting Zuid-Afrikahuis, and Jennifer Tosch, Dutch-American cultural heritage historian and entrepreneur.
