We would be honoured if such a day can serve to bring people together around the world to fight poverty and promote peace, reconciliation and cultural diversity,” according to a statement issued on Mandela’s behalf.Geïnspireerd door deze traditie, werkt het Zuid-Afrikahuis samen met de campagne 67 Blankets in Zuid-Afrika. Dit is een internationale campagne die als doel heeft dekens te verzamelen voor verschillende goede doelen verspreid over heel Zuid-Afrika. Dit jaar werken we samen met Precious Babies, een opvangtehuis voor weeskinderen. Ons doel is één grote deken te creëren, die bestaat uit meerdere kleine gehaakte of gebreide vierkantjes. Dit jaar organiseren wij de workshop iets eerder, namelijk op 19 juni zodat wij ervoor kunnen zorgen dat de deken op Mandela Day, 18 juli, afgeleverd kan worden in Zuid-Afrika. Wil je bijdragen aan deze uitdaging? Dat kan! Brei- en haakworkshop in het Zuid-Afrikahuis Heb je instructies nodig? Of ben je helemaal nieuw op het gebied van handwerken? Doe mee met de workshop die het Zuid-Afrikahuis organiseert op . In 67 minuten leer je alles wat je moet weten om een vierkantje te haken of breien. Wij zorgen voor het materiaal. Voel je je geïnspireerd en wil je alvast beginnen? In dat geval kun je jouw zelfgemaakte vierkantjes opsturen naar ons adres, of kom het langsbrengen tijdens onze openingstijden!

In South Africa, it is tradition to donate 67 minutes of your time for a good cause on the 18th of July, the birthday of Nelson Mandela. On this day, we honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela, according to the Nelson Mandela Foundation:

We would be honoured if such a day can serve to bring people together around the world to fight poverty and promote peace, reconciliation and cultural diversity,” according to a statement issued on Mandela’s behalf.Inspired by this tradition, we collaborate with the campaign 67 Blankets in South Africa. This is an international campaign that collects blankets for charity organisations in South Africa. This year we are working together with Precious Babies, an organisation which supports mothers who struggle to care for newborn babies or newborn babies who have been abandoned. Our goal is to create one big blanket, that consists of several little knitted or crocheted squares. This year we will organise our workshop on June 19th, so the blanket can be donated in South Africa on Mandela Day itself! Do you want to contribute to this exciting challenge? You can! Join our knitting- and crochet workshop at the Zuid-Afrikahuis, where you’ll learn everything you need to know to craft a square. We will arrange all the materials. Do you already know what to do and feel inspired to start crafting? You can also donate your squares to us! Send it to our adress or come pass by the Zuid-Afrikahuis!
