How to form a government in 14 days

South Africa’s first democratic coalition government recently celebrated their first 100 days in office, but numerous policy issues threatening the stability of this government make news headlines every single week – with the former ruling ANC seemingly not in a rush to make any concessions to their coalition partners. Role-players blame these policy squabbles directly on the short timeframe the parties had to reach an agreement to form the government: The South African constitution gives parties only 14 days to form a government after the elections.

Joernalis in die Huis Dawie Boonzaaier will look at how these parties reached an agreement in 14 days, the potential pitfalls regarding this short turnaround time to strike a deal, as well as the lessons they can learn from the Dutch government in taking more time to form a government.

Boonzaaier is political editor for Rapport, South Africa’s largest Afrikaans Sunday newspaper. He has covered the country’s general and local elections of 2016, 2019, 2021 as well as the groundbreaking general election of 2024 where the ruling party, the ANC, fell below 50% for the first time in a democratic South Africa, providing insights on how political parties across the divide formed a government of national unity – a grand coalition of 10 parties – to rule the country.

Boonzaaier has also covered various electoral conferences of political parties such as the ANC and the DA, provides political commentary on the Afrikaans radio station, RSG, and is a regular guest on actuality TV programmes such as In Gesprek and Wie’s Nuus? on the kykNET channel.
