Zuid-Afrikaanse Verkiezingen 2024
Op 29 mei 2024 werden de Zuid-Afrikaanse nationale verkiezingen gehouden. Het jaar 2024 markeert de 30ste verjaardag van de eerste verkiezing na de apartheid in 1994. Sinds 1994 is het African National Congress (ANC) de regerende partij, met Nelson Mandela als hun eerste president. Dit jaar ziet het er echter anders uit voor de ANC. Voor het eerst in dertig jaar is de populariteit van de partij afgenomen, wat heeft geleid tot het verlies van de dominante meerderheid van de ANC. Dit betekent dat de ANC op zoek moet naar coalitiepartners onder andere partijen zoals de Democratic Alliance (DA), de MK Party en de Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Wat betekent dit voor Zuid-Afrika? Wat zijn de onderliggende redenen voor dit resultaat en wat zijn de gevolgen voor het land?

Deze onderwerpen zullen worden besproken met een panel van verschillende specialisten. De Zuid-Afrikaanse politieke journalist William Horne zal zijn mening delen over de uitkomst, vergezeld door politiek correspondent Niels Posthumus en voormalig politiek correspondent Peter ter Horst. We hebben ook het genoegen om historicus Anne-Lot Hoek te verwelkomen, die gespecialiseerd is in het koloniale verleden van Zuid-Afrika, en Olitha Lebelo, voormalig raadslid bij de Zuid-Afrikaanse ambassade in Den Haag. De avond zal worden gemodereerd door Dineo Nhlapo.

South African Election 2024
On the 29th of May 2024, the South African national election was held. The year 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the first post-apartheid election in 1994. Since 1994 the African National Congress (ANC) has been the ruling party, with Nelson Mandela as their first president. This year however, things are looking different for ANC. For the first time in thirty years, the popularity of the party is declined, resulting in the loss of the dominant majority of the ANC. This means that ANC has to look for coalition partners amongst the other parties such as Democratic Alliance (DA), the MK Party and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
What does this mean for South Africa? What are the underlying reasons for this outcome and what are the consequences for the country?
Panel Discussion
These topics will be discussed with a panel of several specialists. The South African political journalist William Horne will share his opinion on the outcome, accompanied by policital correspondent Niels Posthumus and former political correspondent Peter ter Horst. We also have the pleasure of welcoming historian Anne-Lot Hoek, who specializes in the colonial past of South Africa, and Olitha Lebelo, former counsellor at the South African Embassy in The Hague. The evening will be moderated by Dineo Nhlapo.
