Resistance poetry in Afrikaans has, over time, shifted from explicit political protest to more personal and fragmented forms of resistance. Writers and poets of the Sestigers, including André P. Brink, Breyten Breytenbach, Etienne Leroux, Jan Rabie, Adam Small and Ingrid Jonker, challenged established norms and, directly or indirectly, wrote against the injustices of their time.

Today’s voices, such as Nathan Trantraal, Ryan Pedro, Ronelda Kamfer, Veronique Jephtas and Shirmoney Rhode, carry the same fire, but direct it toward new realities such as inequality, violence, identity, and the legacy of a fractured society. More than 30 years after democracy, we are still working through the remnants of apartheid systems, which deepen and complicate these themes. Resistance therefore remains central, but its form and focus have evolved.

Kelly-Lee Ohlson is an Entertainment Reporter at Media24 and will be presenting this Journalist Lecture to the public at Het Zuid-Afrikahuis on the 28th of April 2026 from 16:00-17:30.

We hope to see you there!
