In de Jubileumtentoonstelling ‘Verbonden met Zuid-Afrika’ herdenken we dat het Zuid-Afrikahuis in 2023 honderd jaar gehuisvest is aan de Keizersgracht 141 te Amsterdam.
Met deze tentoonstelling kijkt het Zuid-Afrikahuis terug op zijn geschiedenis in relatie tot de betrekkingen tussen Nederland en Zuid-Afrika. Hoe heeft dit Amsterdamse Huis – zijn mensen en de organisaties die hier in die honderd jaar gevestigd waren en zijn – zijn verbondenheid met Zuid-Afrika gestalte gegeven? Welke kansen en moeilijkheden kunnen we traceren in die gedeelde geschiedenis?
De relatie tussen Nederland en Zuid-Afrika heeft vele ups en downs gekend sinds 1652 toen de Kaapkolonie ‘gesticht’ werd. De gespannen geschiedenis tussen beide landen wordt gekenmerkt door grote thema’s zoals kolonisatie, kolonialisme, discriminatie, oorlog, weerstand, veerkracht en vergiffenis.
Met deze tentoonstelling wil het Zuid-Afrikahuis een aantal van deze thema’s zowel voor het voetlicht halen als tegen het licht houden om tot een beter begrip te komen van wat de verbondenheid tussen beide landen betekende voor iedereen die hierbij betrokken was, en nog steeds betekent.
‘Verbonden met Zuid-Afrika’ neemt de bezoeker mee op een reis door de tijd. De indringendheid en complexiteit van de geschiedenis van Zuid-Afrika kent vele perspectieven. Naast het Nederlandse perspectief is er speciale aandacht voor de eeuwenlang ‘ongehoorde stemmen’ en de niet bezongen helden van Zuid-Afrika.
De gedeelde geschiedenis van Nederland en Zuid-Afrika kent vele ongemakkelijke ‘waarheden’ en gebeurtenissen. Sinds de afschaffing van apartheid heeft Zuid-Afrika zich ontpopt als de Regenboognatie zoals we die vandaag de dag kennen.
Het Zuid-Afrikahuis nodigt u uit om samen met ons te reflecteren op dat gedeelde verleden opdat we niet alleen leren van het verleden maar ook de diversiteit in de geest van de Regenboognatie omarmen.
Ties with South Africa
This exhibition is hosted to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of Zuid-Afrikahuis at Keizersgracht 141. We are making a conscious effort to reflect on the House’s history in relation to the ties between the Netherlands and South Africa. And we are exploring how this specific ‘building’ in the Netherlands, along with the people and organizations, has been interwoven within a relationship with South Africa and its historical opportunities and difficulties.
The relationship between the Netherlands and South Africa has experienced many ups and downs from the time of the ‘establishment’ of the Cape Colony to the present day. The history between these countries is intricate and rich with significant themes such as colonization, colonialism, discrimination, war, resilience, and forgiveness. Through this exhibition, we at Zuid-Afrikahuis aim to delve into some of these themes in order to better comprehend and understand the relationship between the two nations and their people, as seen through the perspective of Zuid-Afrikahuis.
Throughout this exhibition, our goal is to guide you through time, enabling you to explore the depth and diversity of South Africa’s history, as well as how it has been intertwined with the Netherlands beyond just language. We will focus on the voices that have historically been overlooked, shedding light on the unsung heroes among individuals, families, and clans. We will also confront some of the uncomfortable truths and events of our shared past, such as apartheid. However, we won’t stop there, as South Africa has evolved into the Rainbow Nation we know today, with both positive and negative aspects.
Het Zuid-Afrikahuis invites you to join us in reflecting on our shared past as we strive to learn from it, while embracing our diversity in the spirit of the ‘Rainbow Nation’.
About the curator:
Rozé Mettler is from South Africa, born in Queenstown (Komani) Eastern Cape, but raised in Bloemfontein Free State. She graduated from the University of the Free State in 2022 with Honors in Anthropology, specialising in cultural anthropology.
She extensively worked with the community in Heidedal Bloemfontein, Free State, and participated in intercultural exchanges at the university. She is passionate about South African heritage and exploring narratives that are not always mainstream, empowering marginalised communities through engaging with heritage. She is completing a Master’s in Museum and Heritage studies in the Netherlands. Her focus has been exploring the relationship between South Africa and the Netherlands.
