Please note that this event will be in English.

The Dutch translation of the double biography about Winnie and Nelson Mandela, Winnie & Nelson, will be published in May.

In the book, Jonny Steinberg tells the story of the marriage of these two celebrities – and especially of South Africa at the time of that marriage. The marriage symbolizes the battle of direction that arose within the anti-apartheid movement at the time, with Nelson and Winnie both on opposite sides.

On Monday 12 June, moderator Dineo Nhlapo will talk with Steinberg, Olitha Lebelo of the South African embassy and Kier Schuringa, the expert on the anti-apartheid movement(s) in the Netherlands, about the portrayal of Winnie (then and now), the anti-apartheid movement in both South Africa and the Netherlands and the relationship between Nelson and Winnie.

Jonny Steinberg is the author of several books about everyday life in the wake of South Africa’s transition to democracy. He is a two-time winner of the Sunday Times Alan Paton Award, and an inaugural winner of the Donald Windham-Sandy M. Campbell Literature Prizes. Until 2020, he was professor of African studies at Oxford University. He currently teaches part-time at the Council on African Studies at Yale University’s MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies and is visiting professor at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (WISER) in Johannesburg.
